Canton, Mich. -- When a local salsa promoter heard about an after
school high school salsa club looking for a DJ for their yearly dance
show, he was not only surprised, he was delighted. Alice Reyes who's
daughter Alexis is vice president of the Salsa club for Plymouth-Canton
High school was looking for a DJ and the YA Salsa team decided to give
them more. Upon hearing about the club and learning that the students
love to salsa dance, yet had no idea that Detroit had a strong vibrant
dance community, salsa organizer Jamin Williams offered to combine
efforts and draw out members of Detroit Salsa community to the the
Plymouth-Canton high's SALSA (Spanish American Latino Student
Association) show & Social with YA Salsa's upcoming June weekend events. Says Williams, 'I was excited to hear that there were these high
school students who were as passionate and committed to dancing as we
were and surprised that it took so long for us to find each other.'
Two years ago a group of students created the SALSA Club to properly
support Latino culture, raise money for worthy causes and have fun
dancing. The Latin themed club is open to anyone and meets weekly so
that Latino students will have someplace to belong, and those who are
not will have the opportunity to experience the reality of the Latin
culture.
YA Salsa formed four years ago was originally intended to provide
Detroit dancers with a little extra practice time so that they could
improve their dancing for the clubs. The YA Salsa Social now draws
salseros from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Ontario and beyond. Many may
associate salsa dancing with popular TV shows and movies or with
Caribbean culture, but salsa has become popular the world over, across
all cultural backgrounds.
The Canton-Plymouth SALSA Show & Social happens from 7:00 -
10:30 p.m. Saturday June 7th 2008, at the Canton-Plymouth
Educational Park and will feature Latin food performances and social
dancing. DJ Jamin of www.skymambo.com
will spin salsa, cha-cha and merengue until 10:30 p.m. Organizers expect
200 students, parents, and teachers as well as members of Detroit salsa
community. Performances will include student showcases from 7:00 PM -
8:00 PM as well as a performance by world re
nowned professional dancers
Johnny & Andres Giraldo from Boston's Salsa y Control dance company
during the social.
